Hurst Green & Salehurst circular - Thanks to Wil for providing the photos and report of his walk - "The walk was described as strenuous but this didn't put off too many people and a group of fifteen intrepid walkers, accompanied by dogs, Pickles, Barney and Carly congregated at the starting point in Northbridge Street. It was nice to welcome Shirley from Heathfield who joined us for the first time. Leaving the busy A21 behind, we were soon into the first of many climbs we would encounter throughout the day. The terrain got a little easier as we passed through woodland and open farmland to arrive at Hurst Green where we had a break at the recreation ground. From here it was easy walking along field edges until we turned south and uphill again to the impressive house and gardens, Great Wigsell. The land was purchased by the Culpeper family in 1348, but it was a century later when the original house was built. It was owned by the Culpeper family for 300 years, before changing ownership several times until the present. The original house has been altered and rebuilt over the years, as it currently stands, it must be one of the most attractive houses in the area. Continuing uphill we stopped for our picnic near Great Wigsell Farm, where having just taken a bite of our sandwiches a lady from a nearby house challenged us, saying we were on private property! To be fair, she was right as a few of the group had entered into an adjacent field to sit under a large oak tree. A bit of diplomacy from the leader sorted things out and she was happy for us to stay on this occasion. She went on to explain that "she had spotted two people, (myself and John G) looking over into the fields, we often get undesirables here, we've got to be careful". I assume she thought John was the undesirable type! We crossed more undulating countryside with fine views towards the River Rother, through orchards and more fertile farmland and on to Salehurst, soon arriving at our starting location. An enjoyable walk with good company, my thanks to everyone who took part." 27/09/23

Winchelsea, Icklesham and Pannel Nature Reserve circular - Thanks to Peter for his report of today's walk - "Fourteen of us completed the walk with two visitors from the East Kent group, and a warm welcome to two new walkers Andy and Belinda. The sun shone, as usual, and we enjoyed fine views over the Charles Palmer vineyards and out to sea over Winchelsea beach. Two diggers and a huge tracked mud moving truck somewhat disturbed the birds from our stop point at the bird hide in the Pannel Valley, but we could see the herd of deer from there. The return to Winchelsea was along the military canal. Thoroughly enjoyed by all." 26/09/23

Herstmonceux to Wartling circular - Thanks to Jane B for the photos and report of her walk - "What a glorious day for walking, with clear blue skies and sunshine. Thirteen of us set off from All Saints Church Herstmonceux, which has wonderful views across the Pevensey Levels. Our route led us past Herstmonceux Castle where, apparently, in the 12th century a Saxon lady by the name of Idonea de Herst married a Norman nobleman called Ingelram de Monceux, to give the castle & village its name. Passing the green domes of the Observatory & Science Centre we joined the 1066 path, which took us past the wooden sculpture 'Inti Mirant Stella@, depicting Halley's Comet which it is said crossed the sky just before William's invasion. The comet is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. Skirting alongside Wartling Wood and across the fields, to follow the Wallers Haven slow flowing river, the group took a break at Horse Bridge with some curious brown cows greedily eyeing our snacks. Walking uphill and looking back at the wonderful landscape we carried on through Wartling, though too late in the season to forage for Blackberries, our route passed through tall maize fields, battling our way to the end of the fields Indiana Jones Style. Great to have three new walkers, Andy & Belinda, and Lin walk with us today." 23/09/23
